The name
Underplay (verb): (1) industry term — a big act booking a small room; (2) what every other platform does to most of the artists, venues, and writers making the music people actually love; (3) the bands, rooms, and writers most worth your attention finding each other.
Wordmark
The full word "THE UNDERPLAY" set in a heavy condensed sans (Anton on the site, Impact as fallback), stacked on two lines on the home page hero, single line everywhere else. There is no icon or glyph alongside the wordmark — the type IS the mark.
For favicons and small marks, a stamp-style "U" with an ember underline is used. Don't combine the wordmark with mascots, gradients, drop shadows, or music-note clichés.
Color
Ember red is used surgically: chart numerals in listings, the BETA pill, the ON THE WIRE pill, required-field asterisks, the inverted CTA block, hover states. Never for body type, never as a gradient, never as a background wash.
Typography
Voice
Direct, scene-literate, anti-corporate. We use industry vocabulary — underplay, headliner, opener, draw, guarantee, door split — without footnotes. We don't say "discover," "amazing," "elevate," or "community" as a verb. We say "this weekend," "playing tonight," "open to," "submit." We're a wire, not an app.

Where we started, where we go
Origin: Kelowna, BC. The first venues we scraped were interior BC — Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Kamloops, Nelson, Revelstoke, Salmon Arm. That's the story. Listed at 49.9°N · 119.4°W.
Scope: open to anyone, anywhere. A drop from a bedroom producer in Saskatoon is welcome. A show submitted by a venue in Halifax is welcome. A piece pitched by a writer in Austin is welcome. The coverage grows organically with every submission.
Status
Public beta as of May 2026. The BETA pill in the masthead is intentional and stays until we leave beta. Vol/Iss in the strip reflects the current month and day, so each visit is a fresh issue.
